Vision Boards
Today is National Vision Board Day. Do you have a vision board? What kind do you have? Do you update it regularly, or was it a one-time “this is what I want to accomplish in my lifetime” type pf vision board?
TYPES OF VISION BOARDS
Dream Boards
When they first became popular, they were a place to display your hopes and dreams. They became popular shortly after the book, The Secret, came out. The premise at that time was that if you visualized something the “planets aligned” or the “universe manifested” whatever it was that you envisioned. But they weren’t working. So others said you weren’t doing it right. One said a key was missing from The Secret and tried to sell a whole system to show you what that missing key was.
Mind Movies
Another couple came out with “Mind Movies.” These were videos to help you visualize wealth, relationships, and other things. Supposedly by watching and listening to these every day whatever it was that you wanted would manifest. If you wanted to create your own with specific images and desires, they had a program you could buy to help you create your own.
Vision Boards
Eventually, dream Boards evolved into Vision Boards. Vision Boards were different from Dream Boards in that they were a visual reminder of what you desire to attain. These boards were more of a springboard to action. By looking at the board regularly your mind begins to work creatively on solutions and actions. Opportunities you may have missed in the past are more likely to be recognized because your vision is before your eyes daily.
Vision Pages
Some people don’t want a vision board. They may feel intimidated by the “creative” element. Or they may just not want to do that. But some will doodle in their planner – or even have a planner that guides them from a vision or goal to smaller action steps. The action steps could be taking a class, reading books, meeting people in that profession or who share the same interest, anything that moves the, forward toward their vision.
Other Ways
A couple years ago I decided a vision board doesn’t really work for me. I didn’t have a planner that year, attempting to go electronic (didn’t work). So I found pictures of some things I wanted to accomplish, some visions I had, and created a screensaver from them.
It had been a tough couple years for me. All the things I thought were going to be my future had come crashing down. Mainly I just needed to be reminded that everything was going to be okay. That I was going to make it through another year and come out better than where I was at that point. Many of those pictures reflected that. Above is a collage of some of those pictures.
Different Areas
Some people have a board that’s all the different things they are hoping for. Others separate different areas of their life and may even do the different areas in very different ways. Their business/professional dreams and goals may be in written form whereas a dream house, a dream car, a health goal, is more likely a photo. Spiritual goals may be in their Bible or in their prayer book. Sometimes they are Scriptures that serve as a reminder of an area where people are believing for a promise in the Bible.
So…are these just goals?
Yes and no. To me the vision board is the visual part of the end goal. And this is where the old Dream Board and Vision Boards differ – Vision Boards are tied to goals, which are often broken down into smaller progressive goals. If you envision losing weight, you might put a picture of you at a smaller size previously or someone who is the size you’re hoping to achieve, or an outfit you want to wear. You might also put up a picture of some exercise equipment that you plan to use and/or healthy food choices. Looking at them is an inspiration to set and strive to achieve progressive goals – all with the vision of the end goal.
The Purpose of Vision Board Day
The purpose of Vision Board Day is to take time to create a vision board. Take time to dream, plan, and begin the process of setting goals to achieve your vision. Remember that a vision without action is just a wish. Vision, true vision, takes thought and action.
