Squirrel Appreciation Day
Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day. To some, squirrels are a nuisance, but for my household – people and cats alike – they are a source of enjoyment.
I have one squirrel who has visited my kitchen patio window for at least five years. It was young, sickly and scrawny when it first showed up, but now it’s healthy and a bit chubby. It plays with the cats through the window.
When it’s hungry and it sees me through the patio window, it will sit up on its hind legs and beg. And if it’s really hungry, when I go out to feed it, it will run right up my leg to try to grab the food out of my hand. I do not encourage that and I am not really excited about it, but I know the squirrel and the squirrel knows me. It doesn’t mean me any harm.
When I feed in the winter, I tend to put the food in a planter. Then I’m assured no sidewalk salt gets in with their food. I’m also able to put the planter right outside the patio window as a source of enjoyment for my cats. The doves and the bunnies will also eat from there.
If you want to learn more about the many types of squirrels and even play a naming game, visit my Squirrel Appreciation Day post from last year. It’s a fun and educational piece for young and old alike.
